“Soft” Focus To Forward Business with Persistence!

FOCUS is reported to be an entrepreneur’s biggest challenge.  The symptoms:  being busy all the time, but the income doesn’t show it… feeling overwhelmed and fatigued kaleidoscope "soft" focuswith lack of energy…  not enough hours to get it all done…  spinning wheels…  no real direction…  lost-in-space…  many ways to go & trying them all at once to see what works…  In the article, we’ll zoom in on FOCUS to deepen our learning and begin to center, flow, act from strategy & feel the ease…

On a personal note: I’m pleased to let you know that I’ve officially received my co-active professional coaching certification – CPCC – from the Coaches Training Institute’s international program as of 24 June 2009!  This puts me on the list of the top 50 best-trained coaches in Israel!  Be happy to continue to serve you as your business mentor & coach to have you benefit from my additional expertise.

 What is FOCUS?

The following is the definition of FOCUS from the Merriam-Webster’s On-line Dictionary:

1 a: a point at which rays (as of light, heat, or sound) converge or from which they diverge or appear to diverge ; specifically : the point where the geometrical lines or their prolongations conforming to the rays diverging from or converging toward another point intersect and give rise to an image after reflection by a mirror or refraction by a lens or optical system b: a point of convergence of a beam of particles (as electrons) 2 a: focal length b: adjustment for distinct vision ; also : the area that may be seen distinctly or resolved into a clear image c: a state or condition permitting clear perception or understanding <tried to bring the issues into focus> d: direction 6c <the team lost focus> 3: one of the fixed points that with the corresponding directrix defines a conic section 4: a localized area of disease or the chief site of a generalized disease or infection 5 a: a center of activity, attraction, or attention <the focus of the meeting was drug abuse> b: a point of concentration 6: the place of origin of an earthquake or moonquake 7: directed attention : emphasis

Interesting that focus has components of science, art and skill/practice.  This is the lesson that we can also take into our businesses.  To converge as rays of light, to clarify images & perceptions / understandings and to direct & centralize attention!

“SOFT” FOCUS – To converge as rays of light!

Enjoy the journey while getting results!   Try this.  Look at an object on an adjacent wall – a picture, clock or another object.  Concentrate on this object.  Once you are focused on it.  Relax your eyes and widen the view.  See what changes….  This is “soft” focus.  With “soft” focus, we can really see the light.  Concentrate on our goals.  And pay attention to the journey.  And enjoy!  Like the flashlight that is headed in the direction that we point, but has a radius of view that enables some fun & experimenting…

FOCUS WITH FLOW – To clarify images & perceptions / understandings!

Zoom in with creativity & zoom out into the “unknown” or “less-traveled” road….  Within the “soft” focus, we can place our attention on our target.  We also connect to what’s around us and the world in general.  It enables adaptability and flexibility.  Not just fixating on the goal, but on obstacles & feelings, shapes & sounds, etc.  Learning happens along the way.  Not just the doing…  The added dimension with flow is the swimming in the details as well as the metaphoric view from a distance as an observer perspective – a very powerful way of clarifying and gaining understanding from an outside perspective.  Detaching you from the details – becoming able to have multiple layers of focus like a kaleidoscope…  If you find that you’re stuck where you are, struggling a bit – think of the kaleidoscope – be creative and get out of the details and into other places…  Be comfortable with the unknown with curiosity.  Flow…

FOCUS WITH STRUCTURE – To direct & centralize attention!

Overwhelmed?  Try to make a systematic plan towards reaching your goal.  The result is ease & flow….  This may seem counter-intuitive.  I know it was to me.  I wanted to exercise every day.  But when it came to the end of the week, 2-3 times “happened”…  I felt bad…  I decided to plan exactly what I’d do each day – 2 days 7AM Spinning, 2 days 7AM Yoga, 2 days 8:30AM Elliptical Machine.  I then really got to business!  Same goes for setting a goal for adding # of clients to your roster.  And planning into your schedule the activities that you will do daily or things that you need to produce to get this done…  The structure leads to persistence!  Once you lay out what you know you have to do & get into a routine – change of habit – the decision is made up-front.  It releases pressure from your mind.

In summary, add FOCUS to your life & business – one step at a time.  You’ll gain flow, ease and step-wise improvement.  Have fun!!!
